Why I joined FlexCareers
Why I joined FlexCareers Iâm delighted to have recently joined FlexCareers as Chair of the Board of Advisors. It was an easy decision for me! What FlexCareers is going to attempt to do â" to change the way careers work is SOO very overdue that I am pleased to be able to roll up my sleeves and help get it done! As you might be aware, Iâve been a corporate girl most of my working life. Iâve worked in senior HR and business roles in BHP, Sara Lee, (Italian Eyewear giant) Luxottica and most recently CBA. Iâve lived and worked all over the world â" from Australia to Europe to the USA to Asia and back to Australia. During all that time Iâve been a most passionate and outspoken advocate for making businesses (and work) more human. I view âworkâ as a fundamental human right. The right to contribute to the community you live into the very best of your ability. Of course, thatâs a nice idea, but structurally there are always things that make that easier for some groups in society and harder for others. When I walked away from Corporate in the middle of this year, I deliberately wanted to have a greater influence on the things Iâd been agitating and arguing for many years from âinside corporateâ. Thereâs a list of things I want to help change. One of the first things on that list is gender equity. We, women, make up 51% of the Australian population, but we certainly donât get the same opportunities as the other 49%. This is particularly true when you talk about the big jobs. Thereâs more written about âwhyâ that is than I could ever summarise here, but I think a big part of it is the time and focus 73% of us put into families and children, and even more of us, put into caring for our parents and other family members. And I think whilst weâre doing that, weâre picking up a bunch of skills and ideas that would be great for businesses â" collaboration, compassion, generosity, caring, and time management to name just a few. That is, of course, if businesses could accommodate our years of balancing parenting and caring, with âworkâ. Most of the proposed âsolutionsâ to gender inequality focus on recruitment and evening up the playing field. Thatâs nice but I think there are even more solutions to be found in career management and talent management Really making jobs (and work) look totally different. How do we flex businesses to welcome working mums (and increasingly working dads), and women (and increasingly men) with caring responsibilities, so that careers donât stall and breakdown at that point where work is important, but not everything in our lives. So, along came two guys â" Joel McInnes and Marko Njavro with a good idea. They had built and invested in an awesome piece of technology to create a community of people who want to work more flexibly and match them to progressive corporations who understand that flexible work is absolutely the way of the future. It may start with making work more feasible for working mums who want to retain their careers and development, but pretty soon, it will be the way of work for everyone. This crazy way weâre currently working â" 24/7 is simply not sustainable for anyone. We need to rethink work. Rethink flexibility. Rethink careers. This technology that Joel and Marko had personally funded is very unique. Iâve seen lots of recruitment technology but this is something special. When you deal with people who want flexibility, there are a thousand possible models. Thatâs why theyâre so hard to find when youâre an employer. Well, Marko and Joelâs technology has been purpose built and âmatchesâ all sorts of attributes from a person to a job. It matches skills and experiences, of course, and then it matches attributes, and then it matches the structure of the âflexibilityâ youâre looking for. No one else in the market can do that. Then, we started building on what else was needed. Specific programs for returning mums, or anyone who has time out from their careers. Specialised programs to help leaders lead flexible teams. Unique events to build the community into a tight-knit supportive group of like-minded people. So, I joined FlexCareers. The company and, as a working mum of three, the community. Why did I join FlexCareers â" Because careers need to change! We have a lot of work to make that happen, but letâs start with working mums. The single biggest, most highly capable and skilled group of potential contributors, who have for too long been left out in the cold, hoping to find a modicum of flexible work, let alone the opportunity to continue their careers. If we can connect working mums to each other, for support and belief, and to the very best of employers â" the ones who genuinely want to make work flexible and accessible to great people, particularly women â" then maybe, just maybe, we can start changing the world. PoindexterWhy is such an easy question so often hard to answer? Is it because we fear an obligation to ourselves and others by admitting it out loud? Or, could it be that we simply donât feel that we deserve what we want? Even more sinister is the possible negative reaction we may impose upon ourselves by those around us who scoff at the very idea of what we want.Even Charles Dickens in his classic, A Christmas Carol, warned us to fear âwant. He did, however, warn us to fear âignoranceâ even more, but thatâs a subject weâll save for another time.As children, we were free to want as much as our hearts desired. After all, most of our needs were being met, and we had all the time in the world to focus on our wants. We had no obligation to a thinner waistline, so we were free to want that extra helping of cake. We had no obligation to pay the mortgage, so we were free to want that shiny new toy. We had no obligation to our own educatio n, so we were free to want to be astronauts and presidents and professional athletes.As adults, our wants tend to get pushed aside in favor of survival.The problem then becomes one of regret versus fulfillment. Regret for not doing the things we know we should in order to get what we want. Regret for the decisions weâve made that have forced us to put our wants on the back burner. Regret for wanting (and sometimes getting) things that bring us more misery than joy.Wanting, in and of itself, is in no way evil. It can be, after all, the catalyst for great success. The problem is âwantingâ what is bad for us instead of what is good for us. For example, âwantingâ to lie around all morning instead of âwantingâ to workout. Certainly, lying around fulfills a desire. However, working out will fulfill a much more worthy desire: the desire to be better then you are now, versus the desire to be lazy. But itâs difficult to want something you know will bring you discomfort in the short run instead of comfort right now.Iâm not telling anyone, including myself, anything new or shocking here. It is simply meant to be a gentle reminder that when we want the best for ourselves, we must be willing to walk through the fire from time to time.At midnight tonight, the calendar will once again give us the opportunity to reset our lives. We have an opportunity to clarify our wants and work toward them with a renewed spirit and fervor.Your wants are waiting for you. Will 2013 be your year? Only you have the power to decide that, and itâs all based on what you truly want!Happy New Year!
